Hang Kenh Communal House, also referred to as Nhan Tho Communal House. According to the stone stele preserved at the relic, the present Hang Kenh Communal House had been built in 1719 under King Le Du Tong and was reconstructed from 1841 to 1850.
Hang Kenh Communal House located in a large precinct of 6,000 square meters with the traditional architectural lay-out, including the main front hall, the corridor and the rear temple. Apart from main architecture, there are two “giai vu” temples, the literature temple, and the semicircle lake.
The main front hall is the most important part of the House. It was built in a large scale with seven wards of tiled and peak-curved roof. The pressure propping frame that made from iron wood includes 42 posts of over 5 meters height and main posts of nearly 2 meters circumference put upon lotus-shaped carved stone bases. The specific characteristics of the main front hall is shown by sophisticated carved decorating pieces such as: desquamated sculpture, embossment, carving on beams, posts, tie-beams, eaves, etc. The sophistication makes carving pieces lively by plenty of themes such as: dragons, clouds, flowers, plants, unicorns, phoenixes, etc. Especially, in over 100 carving pieces, images of nearly 400 dragons twining with flowers, plants, birds, phoenixes are sculptured sophisticatedly.
The artistic values on architecture and sculpture of Hang Kenh Communal House as well as preservation of scarce boat-shaped flooring planks has brought Hang Kenh Communal House to become a special cultural relic of Vietnam communal houses.
Communal Houses are the most common places for worshipping village gods in Viet Nam. However, this long structured house also dedicated to a Vietnamese hero. It has the shape of a boat with a beautiful façade, the carved frame and precious wooden pillars. The central part is dedicated to King Ngo Quyen, the conqueror of the Chinese South Han in AD 938. The other alters are for his successors.
Hang Kenh Communal House is a special and typical relic of Hai Phong City that was reckoned by the State in 1962.
Every year from the 16th to 18th of the second lunar month, ritual ceremonies, festivals, traditional games and performances of “cheo”, “tuong” and other folk songs are held at the communal house, attracting large crowds.
